at this hour, in southeast washington, an armored truck employee with shot at a popeyes restaurant. we're live on the scene at malcolm x ave. >> tonight, police are looking for that gun man who escaped on foot. witnesses tell us that he escaped around to 3:00 pm and they had seen the armored truck with two people park around eight. police tell us that a gun man walked up to the truck and was trying to rob it. witnesses say they heard an exchange of gunfire. one of the armored truck employees was shot and the gun man ran off. the other employee drove his injured partner to the united medical center. he was bleeding badly, but conscious. there were a lot of people across the street and here is what these two men say they saw and heard. >> it was right there, right at popeyes. there was one shot and that was it. the police to cousy's -- southeast washington and lead to a shoot out. >> it was crazy and i was asleep and i heard about 20 gunshot. >> prince george's county officers say at 2:30 this morning a man robbed someone on kenilworth avenue and 45 minutes later, they got a call about a carjacking. officers responded and got into a high-speed chase with two men in this car. the car had maryland tax. >> the suspect lost control of their vehicle during their pursuit. they bailed out of the suspect vehicle and they exchanged gunfire with uniformed prince george's county police officers. >> police offices also responded to shots off minnesota avenue and arrested one man and a couple of hours later arrested another. they found a handgun and they believe one of the suspects pounded them when they started shooting, they stopped a couple of men and they started all over again ban on no one was injured but officers closed down minnesota avenue to investigate. >> residents did not expect to wake up to a commuter nightmare. no one could drive in or out and metro d toward minibuses. >> it is inconvenient to me

another dangerous situation in southeast washington. this time it ended peacefully. our 9 news now kristin fisher was there and has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: it all started 4:30 this morning when a woman walked in to the street, flagged down an officer and told them there was a man pointing a gun at a woman inside of this home. >> our officers responded to the scene, secured a perimeter and summoned our emergency response team [ sirens ] >> it was more than 40, maybe 30 police cars 5:30 this morning. it was a pretty good number of cars. >> reporter: the suspect held the woman hostage four hours inside of this home. finally at 8:30 the suspect surrendered. no one was injure and no shots were fired. police are trying to find the suspect's alleged gun and trying to figure out a motive and the relationship between his suspect and hostage. both are safe and in police custody. neighbors say they are relieved the standoff ended peacefully but are quick to point out all of this police presence made a mess of their morning. >> it was messy. couldn't get through. couldn't nobody

a shootout in southeast washington. officers first responded to a rot of a carjacking in the 4700 block of silver hill road in suitland, maryland. units followed two suspects in to southeast washington where police say they fired on the pursuing officers near 38st and g streets. the officers returned fire and took the suspects in to custody but police say at least one more suspect was in the car jacked vehicle which is a described as a four door, burgundy avalon with maryland tags. >>> flames ripped through a neighborhood forcing families our of their homes. it happened last night in manassas, virginia. the fire spread quickly between close together homes in the 8300 block of ti llo, to tt loop. kristin fisher has more. >> this fire started more than 84 hours ago. firefighters had contained it by 8:00 or 9:00 last night. but just about 15 minutes ago, two firefighters got to work. they broke out the hoses again and tried to put out more hot spots that had just popped up just behind me. they have actually just stopped working, but they were out there trying to contain a bit more hot spot

in southeast washington in the first few minutes of october 7th, 2008, found a young woman, quote, many visible stab wounds on her upper chest, middle chest and with blood coming out of her sides and abdomen. the neighbor julie schofield who helped -- held the hand of the bleeding victim told the jury she asked me am i going to die? schofield testified her answer was no, basically, to comfort the young woman. and the victim took the stand in the late afternoon. now a give-year-old woman, she told jurors she moved in a few days before the attack. the woman recalled being awakened by a nose and seeing -- noise and seeing the figure come down the stairs to her basement pardon me. she ran to the bathroom and called 911 to report an intruder. the prosecution said that instride of -- intruder of rashan g of northeast washington. he sat quietly in the courtroom during the testimony. and the defense position in this case is prosecutors have the wrong guy and point out that the victim's own statements to police was that the assailant was wearing a hood and pulled it over his face. the arrest took eight

to the stabbing at 548 49th street in southeast washington told the victim that she lost so much blood her veins were too flat to start an intrahave anous injection of fluids. the now-25-year-old woman told the jury when she saw a knife in the hand of the man who came down to her basement pardon me, she said oh, please, no. without a word, she said, the man started stabbing her in the chest and in her stomach. she tried to get away and stumbled. the victim testified her assailant stabbed her in the back, the arms and the back of her legs and during her testimony, the woman barely looked at the accused who listened intently and sometimes shook his head. at one point, the victim testified, she heard a zipper and her assailant tried to pull down her underwear. she kicked at the man and then he left. the victim made it to the front porch and called out for help saying a man knocked the assailant -- not the assailant, walked on by without stopping. the neighbors, paramedics and police arrived thereafter. the victim, however, never identified rashan g. in court as her hood-wearing attacker. in fact, t

: a few miles from the white house in southeast washington sit some of the worst public schools in america. the students there are mostly poor, mostly black, and their test scores are low. only one in three finish high school. of those who do go on to college, just 5% graduate. but right in the middle of this same area is also one of the most successful and innovative public schools in the country. started in 1998, the school is called seed. it's the nation's first urban public boarding school. as we reported this past spring, 91% of the students finish high school, and 95% go on to college. it's a charter school that's getting national attention. admission is by lottery, open to any family in the district willing to take a chance. >> girl 41.
